Lagos State has positioned itself as the tourism, entertainment, and commercial capital of Nigeria, playing a strategic leadership role in the development of tourism across the Southwest geopolitical zone.
Through
deliberate government policies, public-private partnerships, and continuous
investment in infrastructure, Lagos has become a catalyst for regional tourism
growth, job creation, and national economic diversification.
Government-led initiatives such as destination branding, creative economy support, and cultural festivals have strengthened Lagos’ position as a regional tourism hub, linking seamlessly with neighboring states like Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti.
Tourism development in Lagos has generated a ripple effect across the Southwest region. Improved road networks, airport expansion, coastal development, and hospitality investments have enhanced regional connectivity and visitor flow. Tourists entering Lagos often extend their journeys to heritage sites such as Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, Ibadan cultural landmarks, Idanre Hills, Erin Ijesha Waterfalls, and other attractions across the region.
This interconnected tourism ecosystem supports regional trade, MSMEs, creative industries, transportation services, and community enterprises, strengthening the Southwest’s contribution to Nigeria’s GDP.
Lagos State remains one of Africa’s most attractive destinations for tourism and hospitality investment. Opportunities exist across hotels and resorts, beach and waterfront tourism, cultural and heritage tourism, conference, exhibition, and event centers, theme parks and recreational facilities, creative and digital entertainment hubs, employment generation, revenue diversification, urban regeneration, youth and creative sector empowerment, cultural preservation and national identity promotion.
Through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), the Lagos State Government continues to unlock underutilized tourism assets, encourage foreign direct investment, and promote sustainable tourism practices that deliver long-term economic returns.
Lagos is the undisputed capital of Nigeria’s music, film, fashion, and nightlife industries, which have become powerful tourism drivers. The global success of Afrobeats, Nollywood, and cultural events has positioned Lagos as a destination for entertainment tourism, attracting international visitors, festivals, concerts, and business events.
Major tourism-entertainment events hosted in Lagos have elevated Nigeria’s global image, increased visitor spending, and stimulated allied sectors such as hospitality, logistics, media, and technology.
As Nigeria’s commercial nerve center, Lagos integrates tourism with business travel, trade, and investment promotion. The city hosts regional and international conferences, exhibitions, trade fairs, and corporate events, reinforcing its role as a hub for business tourism (MICE).
Lagos tourism development contributes directly to the national tourism development; Lagos’ tourism leadership supports Nigeria’s broader goals of economic diversification, sustainable development, and global competitiveness.
The Lagos State Government’s proactive approach to tourism development
continues to shape the Southwest tourism landscape, positioning the region as a
leading destination for investment, entertainment, and business in Africa. By
leveraging culture, creativity, infrastructure, and strategic partnerships,
Lagos is not only driving regional growth but also contributing significantly
to Nigeria’s national development agenda.
