Oyo State has emerged as one of Nigeria's most promising destinations for tourism, investment, culture, and commerce. Under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, the state has witnessed significant improvements in road infrastructure, urban renewal, investment promotion, and efforts to position Oyo State as a preferred destination for both domestic and international visitors.
However, no
tourism destination can thrive without security. Investors may admire
infrastructure, tourists may appreciate cultural attractions, and businesses
may recognize economic opportunities, but without confidence in public safety,
growth can quickly stall.
Recent
security concerns in parts of Nigeria, including the movement of armed criminal
groups across some regions, highlight the importance of sustained vigilance.
Regardless of where such criminal elements originate, they should be treated as
criminals under the law, and security responses should be based on evidence,
intelligence, and respect for the rights of all law-abiding residents.
Sustainable Tourism depends on Peace! Tourism is one of the first sectors to suffer when insecurity rises. Even isolated incidents can affect public perception, discourage investment, reduce visitor confidence, and slow economic activity. Hotels, transport operators, restaurants, cultural centres, artisans, tour guides, and local communities all depend on a stable and secure environment.
Oyo State possesses exceptional tourism assets protecting these emerging tourism, cultural and hospitality assets require proactive security planning, as well as protecting the success of this government against both internal and external threats.
Protecting tourism assets, investments and economic growth - Government investment in infrastructure is intended to attract private capital. Roads, airports, business districts, hotels, and recreational facilities create an ecosystem for growth. In other words, security is the foundation that enables these investments to deliver long-term benefits.
A secure Oyo State will continue to attract international tourism investors, Hotel developers, Conference and event organisers, Cultural exchange programmes, Sports tourism, Film production, festivals, international cultural and tourism engagements, educational tourism, Agricultural investment etc. Without effective security mechanism, these opportunities become more difficult to realize.
A multi-layered security strategy must be deployed to strengthen Oyo State's position as a leading destination, the government could continue to build on existing security efforts through measures by using technology, including surveillance systems and communication tools, in strategic locations where appropriate, increasing security presence around tourism corridors, parks, major highways, and investment zones, supporting border and inter-state security coordination to monitor criminal movements while respecting lawful travel and citizens' rights, investing in youth employment, skills development, and entrepreneurship to reduce the conditions that can contribute to crime.
Security must unite, not divide, it is important to distinguish between criminal groups and peaceful individuals or communities. Public policy should avoid assigning blame to entire ethnic or national groups without evidence. Effective security depends on targeting criminal behaviour through intelligence and law enforcement while protecting the rights of law-abiding citizens.
Sustainable Leadership - Governor Seyi Makinde has laid an important foundation for economic development and tourism in Oyo State. The next phase is to ensure that these achievements are protected through sustained investment in security, collaboration with federal authorities, and partnerships with local communities.
However, if Oyo State remains peaceful, secure, and welcoming, it can strengthen its reputation as one of Nigeria's leading destinations for tourism, culture, business, and investment. Protecting that environment is essential to preserving the progress already made and creating lasting opportunities for future generations.
Within the Southwest region, a secure Oyo State is not only good for sustainable tourism development, it is also good for every resident, every investor, and every visitor. Peace remains the strongest and one of the pillars and foundation for sustainable tourism development.
